Dennis M. Gehley

Dennis Michael Gehley died on January 27, 2021 at age 74 of several longtime illnesses. He passed at his home in Ashburn, Virginia in the presence of his son David Gehley and childhood friend Jim Murphy. Dennis is survived by his daughter Lisa Angerer (Jay) of New Orleans and son David Gehley (Becky) of Ashburn, Virginia; his grandchildren Renee and Cole Angerer and Matthew and Michael Gehley. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly thirty years, Nancy Jean Gehley, and will be interred with her at Arlington National Cemetery. He is also survived by his younger siblings Diana Trammell (Woody), Doug Gehley (Lane), Denise Carlson (David) and Darlene Brown (Craig). Dennis will be remembered as “Uncle Dennis” to his many nieces and nephews and “Pops” to his grandchildren.

Dennis was born on November 16, 1946. As the only brown-haired, brown-eyed child of Lawrence  Edward Gehley and Goldie Agnes Sedlacek Gehley, he always joked he was the prototype that was “rejected.” He graduated from Bishop D. J. O’Connell High School (1964) and UVA (1968) and also earned a Masters from George Washington University. Dennis served in the Army in Vietnam and Germany and rose to the rank of Captain. He retired from the General Accounting Office (GAO) in 2006. He was a longtime communicant of St. Bernadette's parish in Springfield, VA and rose to be a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was a larger-than-life personality, funny and fun-loving. His charm was legendary. He laughed, loved, fathered, danced, curated, listened, organized, collected, created, traveled, landscaped, puttered, cursed, advised, joked, disc jockeyed, dined and dreamed.

May our memories of him be everlasting.

Dennis visits the Columbarium at Arlington National Cemetery.
